Northern Red Oak
Oak trees are considered important for many different types of insects, birds, and mammals. Northern Red Oak is found across southern Ontario north to Sault Ste Marie. It is a near native tree to northwestern Ontario. Northern red oak, as with all oaks, is slow growing but long living. Northern red oak likes full sun but tolerates some shade. It grows in a variety of soil conditions, from medium wet to medium dry. Northern red oak needs room to grow and does not like to grow near other trees.
Our oaks are sold as one or two year seedlings which means they are quite small. It is important to plant trees small so their roots are not pot bound. This means the trees will live longer when planted younger. You may need to protect your oak tree from deer.
