Our Philosophy
- Native plants are our raison d'etre. We believe that if everyone made an effort to plant native plants, we can help, in some small way, reverse biodiversity loss and climate change.
- Every plant is sown from seed that we have collected locally or as close to local as possible. On rare occasions, we source our seeds from reputable seed companies. We promise that we will be able to tell you where the seeds came from for the plants that you purchase.
- We never dig our plants out from the wild. And we don't buy plants from other growers. All our plants are sown from seed we have collected and on the rare occasion purchased. We grow our gardens so that we can harvest seeds from them.
- A few of our plants are grown from cuttings or division of existing plants and trees. We are conscious of genetic diversity, and make every effort to obtain cuttings from a variety of sources, and to grow from seed where possible.
- All our seeds are harvested ethically and responsibly. We harvest from our gardens in Thunder Bay, from our property in Pass Lake, from friends' gardens and farms with permission, and from other areas that we are permitted to.
- Our seeds are generally not cultivars or ‘nativars’, but rather are the pure seeds from native plants without any genetic modification. Because we source from gardens, we cannot guarantee that cross pollination won't occur, but we make every attempt to source seeds from pure native plants.
- We grow without pesticides and attempt to use organic fertilizers when we can. We do not harvest or purchase seeds that have been treated with harmful chemicals.
- We are striving to be as sustainable as possible. The horticulture industry contributes significantly to plastic waste. You may find that we use unconventional packaging in addition to traditional plastic pots. We also encourage you to return your pots to us after purchasing plants from us. This is because we are trying to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
